Hybrid Solar + Generator Installation: Quantum Foods

To reduce reliance on diesel during South Africa’s ongoing load shedding, MGCS commissioned a hybrid backup power system combining solar energy with a diesel generator for seamless switchover and operational continuity.

⚡ Hybrid Solar + Generator Installation: Quantum Foods

Client: Quantum Foods
Location: Cape Town, South Africa
Scope: Hybrid Backup Power System (Solar + Diesel Generator)
Key Systems: Fronius PV Monitoring, Changeover Panel, 94kW Inverter Array, Backup Generator
Goal: Reduce diesel consumption during load shedding through solar offset
Completion: November 2025

Project Summary

To reduce reliance on diesel during South Africa’s ongoing load shedding, Quantum Foods commissioned a hybrid backup power system combining solar energy with a diesel generator for seamless switchover and operational continuity.

This integrated solution is designed to:

  • Prioritise solar usage during the day
  • Automatically switch to generator only when solar or grid is unavailable
  • Use solar PV to reduce the runtime and fuel consumption of the generator during extended outages

Outcomes & Benefits

✅ Significant reduction in diesel costs during weekday daytime operation
✅ Improved system redundancy and resilience during extended blackouts
✅ Real-time insights via mobile and desktop platforms
✅ Ready for future battery or demand-side integration

Why It Matters

Load shedding in South Africa continues to strain commercial operations. By combining solar offset with intelligent generator controls, Quantum Foods now has a smarter way to stay online — reducing operating costs and carbon footprint at the same time.

This hybrid system demonstrates how modular energy design can solve real business challenges and keep cold storage systems running without breaking the bank.
